What is MidJourney's new blend feature?

MidJourney introduced the new /blend command a couple days ago. This new feature allows you to more easily select images from your PC or mobile gallery and then blend or combine them together using MidJourney's v4 algorithm.

Using images in MidJourney prompts is not new, but this new blend command makes it much simpler. Using blend, you can add up to 5 images that you want MidJourney to look at and use to create a new image.

Currently, /blend will only create square images. If you give it images that are not square, you may end up with blank border area on 2 sides of the square image output.

How to use the blend command with MidJourney

1. Type /blend instead of typing in /imagine. Then add a space or press enter. Discord screenshot below.

2. Next, you should have something that looks like the image below. From your PC or mobile phone, select each individual image you want to use.

3. Press enter to submit the prompt.

The --v 4 parameter will automatically be added to your prompt when you submit it. You cannot add text to your prompt when you use /blend.

Including text with a prompt when combining images

The /blend command currently does not allow you to include text. It is simply a way to quickly and easily blend multiple images together to create something new.

If you want to use both images and text in your prompt, you will need to use the /imagine command. Within your imagine prompt, you can include hyperlinks to the image(s) you want to use. If you want to use images that are stored locally, you can upload your images to Discord. After they are uploaded to Discord, right click on each image and select "Copy Link". Then you can use those image links in your prompt.

Here, I will use the 2 cat images from above. I can simply copy and paste the prompt text that I got when using the blend command (because it includes the hyperlinks to the 2 images) and then make any changes I want.

So, let's do /imagine https://s.mj.run/KvplANMmP7w https://s.mj.run/KwnII5EN3u4 desert --v 4 --chaos 10 . The hyperlinks link to the same 2 cat images that I used as input for the example above.

In the next example, you can see what happens to the output when the input images to the blend command are not square.

Summary

  • The blend command in MidJourney makes it easy to quickly select and combine images.

  • Blending images in this manner works best with input images that are square.

  • Currently, you cannot add text to your blend prompt.

  • To blend images that are not square and/or to include text and images in your prompt, I recommend uploading your images to Discord and then include the hyperlinks to those images as part of an /imagine prompt with a defined aspect ratio (click here for a tutorial on aspect ratio), instead of using /blend.
